I like that you mentioned in your narrative that teachers cannot and should not assume students possess these above skills/values. It is easy for me to remember to write objectives for academic goals and difficult to remember to create objectives and lessons focused largely on social skills. After all, everyone needs social skills to function well in daily life; not everyone needs geometry (sorry to math teachers...I actually really like geometry ;) I'm looking forward to learning more ways of teaching character education!
I must say that I really like your idea of having a poll on the homepage. Additionally, I appreciate the article you posted on school climate. At one point, school climate was part of my dissertation focus until I switched topics. Schools should provide a safe and supportive environment for all students. One where students can have positive social relationships, feel respected and valued, as well as engaged in their work.
In enjoyed the article on character education. This is something that will benefit our students in their future. Students must have the ability to engage with each other, and this will allow for mutual respect, which is essential both inside and outside of the classroom.
I find it interesting that so many of these skills that you are mentioning here are those which help to combat bullying in schools. Is it possible that we are seeing a rise in bullying because of a lack of deliberate character education?
