"Moral compass"

"Students need to develop a 'moral compass' so they can choose actions that are right over those that are wrong" (Black, 1994).

  1. This is so true! I never realized how important it is for teachers to not only teach content, but social skills and decision making. In your perspectives section, you mentioned the value of mentoring programs. This would be a great way for students to have positive role models and also ask those role models to be more considerate in their actions.

  2. Although I am a big fan of character education in schools, I can see how it could get "sticky" when trying to determine "which" rights/wrongs to teach in public schools. The 'divergent views' section in the article you posted on character education brought this to my attention. If you teach a group of students from a variety of religious/cultural backgrounds, some "assumed" rights/wrongs may not actually be viewed the same way by all families. I wonder if holding a family meeting night to develop general character education objectives would prove effective or if it would heighten controversy?
